Advance through technology – Health through advance

The Department of Plastic Surgery and Handy Surgery is part of the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar and combines clinical experience with expert knowledge at the highest level. We have doctors specialized in every field of plastic surgery, which allows us to focus on all the following areas:

Reconstructive Surgery

In addition to performing general reconstructive surgery ranging from head to toe, our Department is distinguished for its innovative treatments.  Our Department is only one of the few university hospitals in the nation to provide successful treatment of lymphedema of the extremities by free microvascular lymph node transfers. In addition to scar revision and the surgical correction of post-traumatic or post-surgical deformities appearing anywhere on the body, we also specialize in wound healing (either through trauma or wounds caused by cancer) through microsurgical tissue transplantation.

We also treat patients suffering from complex nerve injuries such as brachial plexus injuries and facial palsy.  We have successfully treated facial paralysis or related conditions by using innovative free flap muscle transfer surgical procedures.  Through it we have helped many patients regain the ability to move the paralyzed side of their face.  Whether occurring as the result of shoulder trauma, tumors or inflammation, our surgeons continue to help patients suffering from these complex nerve injuries.

Aesthetic Surgery

We also perform a wide range of elective aesthetic surgery on the face, which includes face- and browlifts, and body, which commonly includes breast surgery, including implants and the use of patient’s own fat tissue and stem cells. Other aesthetic surgical procedures include rhinoplasty, liposuction, sculpturing, abdominoplasty and thigh lift.

Hand Surgery

Our highly experienced team of hand surgeons focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders in the hand, arm and upper extremities of all kinds.  We are especially proud of our finger and hand replantation success rate.  One of the unique services we offer is a 24-hour, round-the-clock, replantation center, which was recently recertified as a Hand Trauma Center by IFSSH (“International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand”).

Reconstructive hand surgery includes the open or endoscopic release of compression syndromes of nerves, the correction of deformities as well as the restoration of tendon injuries with tendon transplants. Motoric substitution operations are done frequently to recover functions after severe trauma. Dupuytren’s disease of the hand as well as the therapy of the “chronic painful wrist” are common problems we treat on a daily basis.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative Medicine refers to many innovative therapies, which aim to regenerate the body’s own tissue. Using modern biomaterials and specific predesigned molecular factors, these methods differ from the traditional surgical procedures where only surgery may be an option. We offer these promising cutting-edge procedures for the treatment of chronic wounds, local circulatory disorders, degenerative arthritis, skin and bone replacement and for aesthetic purposes.
